Hi, I’m Julie Portnoy, LCSW.
I’ve been a therapist for over 35 years, working with teens and young adults as they navigate the many transitions and challenges of growing up. Whether it’s managing ADHD, anxiety, depression, or exploring identity, gender, or sexuality, I offer a space that is supportive, affirming, and grounded in deep respect for each person’s unique experience.
My approach is collaborative, down-to-earth, and focused on connection. I believe therapy works best when there’s a good fit between therapist and client, and I bring warmth, humor, and curiosity into our work together. I often draw from family systems and strengths-based perspectives to help clients better understand themselves, improve relationships, and build a life that feels more aligned and fulfilling.
I knew early on that I wanted to become a therapist. My own experience in therapy as a teen was life-changing—it gave me language for what I was feeling and a path forward. That therapist later became my mentor and helped shape the clinician I am today.
Outside of work, I love to read, walk, explore new cities, and spend time with the people I love. I’m endlessly fascinated by the stories people carry and
honored to be a part of the healing process.
I earned my B.A. in psychology from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1987, and my Master of Social Work from the University of Illinois at Chicago's Jane Addams College of Social Work, in 1989. A native of the Chicago area, I am also a New Trier High School alum.
